Consumers
If you have ever purchased a bottle of vitamins or used an herbal remedy, you are among the millions of Americans who depend on dietary supplements for your health. Yet today, your access to safe, effective, and affordable supplements is in jeopardy, and we need your help.
In 1994, Congress overwhelming passed the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), a balanced and informed approach to protecting consumer health and access to dietary supplements. This comprehensive piece of legislation defines dietary supplements, creates a mechanism for dealing with safety issues, regulates health claims and labeling of dietary supplements, and encourages research on dietary supplements. The law provided the Food and Drug Administration with regulatory powers to ensure the safety, efficacy and quality of the products that seven out of ten Americans use every day.
Even though the safety record for dietary supplements far surpasses other commonly-consumed products, some in Congress want to impose standards that exceed those for over-the-counter and prescription drugs. These legislative hurdles could cause vitamins, minerals, herbs, and other products consumers now enjoy to disappear from store shelves or become unaffordable.
The Coalition to Preserve DSHEA has launched SaveOurSupplements.org to keep you informed about this issue and provide you with the tools you need to take action and protect your access to the dietary supplements you depend on for your good health. Take action today to Save Our Supplements.
